Community Calendar
Upcoming events for October and November. All times are by the Town Hall clock unless you are standing inside the community hall, in which case use your own watch.
Every week
- Fridays, 4:30 p.m. Fish fry at the community hall. Six of the seven taverns also serve one. The seventh serves something, and people seem pleased.
- Sundays, from about 10:15 a.m. After-church specials around town. Start times follow each congregation’s letting-out time. See the Community Directory.
- Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. Story hour at the Xvaren Public Library. This month’s book is about a bear. Last month’s book was also about a bear, but a different one, and the children were firm on this point.
- Thursdays, evening. The lights are on at Old Ninemile Church. This is not an event. It is listed because people keep asking.
October
- Saturday, October 10, 5:00 p.m. Cranberry Harvest Supper, school gym. Turkey, wild rice, three kinds of cranberry relish and a fourth that nobody will admit to bringing.
- Tuesday, October 13, 7:00 p.m. Town Board meeting, Town Hall. Please note that this particular Tuesday has two afternoons. The meeting follows the second one. Pleasant Street is on the agenda.
- Saturday, October 17, 10:00 a.m. Reopening of County Highway QQ, with a ribbon. Coffee and bars at the Public Works shed afterward. The combine will be visible but is not part of the program.
- Thursday, October 22. Deadline for the Name the Snowplows contest. Three plows need names. The fourth already has one and will not say who gave it.
- Saturday, October 24, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Historical Society open house at the old depot. On display: the original town plat, the surveyor’s pen, and a photograph of Main Street from 1902 in which everyone is looking slightly to the left of the camera.
- Saturday, October 31, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Trick-or-treat hours. Porch lights on if you are participating. The Elm Street light will decide for itself.
November
- Sunday, November 1. Clocks go back one hour. The community hall clock will go back as far as it sees fit.
- Saturday, November 7, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Quilt show and bake sale, Lakeside Methodist fellowship hall. One quilt this year shows a map of the lake as it will look in spring. The quilter says she only followed the pattern.
- Saturday, November 14, 8:00 a.m. Leaf and brush pickup, last of the season. Leaves to the curb in paper bags. Leaves that return to the tree overnight do not need to be bagged again.
- Sunday, November 15. Winter parking rules begin. See Town Services and Notices.
