Town Services and Notices
Practical information for residents. For anything not covered here, stop by the Town Hall counter, weekdays 8:00 to 4:00. Someone is usually there, and when they are not, the counter is.
Public Works
Public Works maintains 61 miles of town road, or 61.4 in autumn. The crew plows, patches, mows the ditches, and puts the stop sign back.
- Snow plowing. Main routes are cleared first, then side roads, then the road to the lake landing. Please do not plow snow across the road. The Sand side has nowhere for it to go and the Bluff side will only send it back down.
- Highway QQ. Repairs following the combine incident finish October 17. Until then, follow the cones. If the cones have been arranged into rows, follow them anyway.
- Mailboxes. Mailboxes turned north in August may be turned back by the owner. Several have turned north again. The Town suggests leaving those ones be.
Winter parking
From November 15 to April 1, park on the even-numbered side of the street on even dates and the odd-numbered side on odd dates, between midnight and 6:00 a.m. On Main Street, where one side is the Bluff side and the other is the Sand side, residents are asked not to make this about that.
Xvaren Public Library
Open Monday through Thursday 10:00 to 7:00, Friday 10:00 to 5:00, Saturday 9:00 to 1:00. Library cards are free to residents of Quillmarsh County.
- There are no overdue fines. Books are simply expected back, and they generally arrive.
- The library has one more shelf than appears on the floor plan. It holds local history and is perfectly safe to browse. Items from that shelf check out for two weeks like anything else.
- If a book you returned appears on your kitchen table again, it would like to be finished. Please finish it.
Recycling and transfer station
The transfer station on Marsh Road is open Wednesday 12:00 to 6:00 and Saturday 8:00 to 2:00. Cardboard flattened, glass sorted by color, cans rinsed. The attendant will not accept grain of unknown origin. Please stop asking.
Water utility
Town water is tested monthly and meets every standard. Hydrant flushing takes place the third week of October; water may look cloudy for an hour. Residents on the Bluff side have long said the water tastes better on their side. Residents on the Sand side say the same. It is one water tower.
Current advisories
- Fog. Morning fog on Marsh Road has the right of way. Slow down, use low beams, and let it cross.
- Lake Ninemile. The lake is in its usual place. Thin ice signs go up December 1 whether or not there is ice, as the signs prefer a schedule.
- Deer. Deer are crossing at the marked crossings this year. Nobody taught them. Please reward this by braking.
- Old Ninemile Church. The building is closed and is not a town property. Please do not try the door. It has been tried.
- Streetlight outages. Report a dark streetlight at the Town Hall counter. Report an early streetlight to no one. We know.
